Mike lives in Calera, AL with his wife, Kelli, three kids, Zoey, Abby, and Max, and two Giant Chinchillas, Buster P. Thunderbunny, and Flopsy D. Thunderbunny.
He holds a Master of Music degree in Performance and Pedagogy from Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Samford University in Birmingham, AL. Mike is a sought-after clinician and arranger, representing Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets. Mike has served as a staff arranger for many high schools throughout Alabama and Oklahoma, and has written for the Oklahoma State University Cowboy Marching Band, The Texas State University Bobcat Marching Band, and Samford University's Bulldog Marching Band.
As a performer, Mike has been section percussionist and timpanist with the Alabama Winds adult Concert Band, performing at the 2017 Midwest Conference in Chicago, IL. Mike has played percussion for many productions in the Birmingham Area, and has performed as a member of the Birmingham Percussion Group, Birmingham Steel, Celebration Winds, The Birmingham Community Band, The Stillwater Community Band, The Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble, The Cullman County Community Band, and the Left of Center Percussion Duo. Mike still actively performs as an ensemble member and soloist throughout Alabama. He also participated in a commissioning project for the Concerto for Marimba by David Gillingham in 2005.
As a clinician and author, Mike's article “One in a Million: Choosing the Right Method book” was published in the June, 2005 edition of the journal of the Percussive Arts Society, Percussive Notes. This article was used as foundation for his Master of Music degree project, Finding Your Way: Developing a Curriculum in Today’s Public School and University Percussion Studio.
Mike has studied with Dr. John W. Parks, IV, James "Jed" Davis, Clint Gillespie, Dr. Grant B. Dalton, Dr. Tracy Wiggins, and Wayne Bovenschen in the area of percussion, Dr. Timothy Banks and Dr. Paul Popeil in conducting, and Dr. Mike D'Ambrosio in composition. He has received coaching from Dr. Joseph Missal, Michael Burritt, Katarzyna Mycka, Dr. Andy Harnsberger, Dr. Greg Giannascoli, Charlie Wilkinson, Clark Harrell, Bill Williams, Nancy Zeltsman, Mark Ford, and Dame Evelyn Glennie (and she gave me a biscuit at Copeland's!).
Mike is certified to teach and considered “Highly Qualified” in the Alabama Public Schools. He was named to the 2009-2010 Cambridge Who’s Who in Leadership in Professional Careers. Mike is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Alabama Bandmasters Association, the Percussive Arts Society, the Vic Firth Education Team, and attends, reads, and watches every single learning experience he can get his hands on!
